Ben Barritt (UK)
Vielleicht trifft die Bezeichnung moderner Geschichtenerzähler am besten auf den Singer/Songwriter und Gitarristen Ben Barritt zu. Inspiriert von Joni Mitchell, John Martyn und Paul Simon lässt er in seinen Songs Folk, R&B und Jazz/Rock auf eine eigensinnige Weise verschmelzen.
Er illustriert dabei Momente, Geschichten oder Gefühle, die ihn auf unterschiedlichste Weise beeinflusst haben. So reflektieren einige seiner Kompositionen Erinnerungen an sein Leben in London - die Stadt, in der in der er aufwuchs und die er für einen Neuanfang in Berlin hinter sich ließ. Ein weiteres wiederkehrendes Motiv ist der leise rebellische Ruf nach der Freiheit eines jeden. Stets umweht seine Songs dabei - im Versuch Freude und Traurigkeit als Konstanten des Lebens anzunehmen - ein Hauch von Optimismus.
Nach ausgedehnten Tourneen durch Europa, Asien und die USA - sowohl solo als auch gemeinsam mit seinen Künstlerkollegen und Freunden Jim Kroft und Mishka Adams - zieht es Ben nun wieder zurück auf die Bühnen Deutschlands.
Im Herbst ist er mit seiner EP „Sundial“, aufgenommen von Matt Ingram und Dan Cox (LianneLaHavas) und gemastert von Matt Coulton (Coldplay), wieder solo unterwegs.

His CV is more diverse than it is impressive: He’s played every London stage from the Water Rats to the Albert Hall, serenaded princesses on Richard Branson’s private island, played packed arenas dressed as Brian May, sung BVs for Bobby McFerrin in the Barbican and for Damon Albarn on a Greenpeace boat in the middle of the Thames. He’s scraped the rent playing hundreds of loud, dirty club gigs across the UK and also recorded on Kenny Wheeler’s latest album. He’s jammed Meters tunes with Mike Kiwanuka and Joss Stone, played New Orleans banjo in Henley on Thames, performed far and wide from Kitzbühel to Dubai, Antigua to Barrow-in-Furness.
In the midst of this exciting but uncertain career he’s been busy collaborating to make new music, some of which can be seen on the music page. Making his escape from London’s unforgiving economy touring Europe as sideman with EMI artist and fellow Berlin resident Jim Kroft, he’s been travelling back to work with a community of like-minded musicians from the Jazz and Soul scenes, some of whom can be heard on this record.
The songs are heavily inspired by the Laurel Canyon and Island artists who blended Folk/Rock with Jazz and R&B. The music is alternative- an old-fashioned songwriting style full of surprising harmonic turns but with pop melody at it’s core. The band’s musicianship shows a virtuosic flair restrained by their focus on bringing the song to life.
Ultimately these are four lyrically driven songs tied together by a theme of existing in the moment: finding optimism in loneliness, joy from uncertainty and identity from alienation. Exactly the thoughts of someone taking their life in a new and unknown direction. The closing acoustic tune was written as a love song to the city left behind.
