Was kann man über die Musik von Familiar Wild sagen? Es ist eine Fahrt die Abgründe der inneren Küstenlinien hinunter, um verschüttete Erinnerungen und noch nicht aufgegebene Träume wieder aufzunehmen. Sie ist ein Gewebe aus Glasfaser-Zweigen, das die Basis für sinfonische Melodien bildet, in die man sich einhüllen und darauf hinwegfließen möchte.

Als Kind lief die Band Begründerin Melissa Bandura barfuß über die bernsteinfarbene Manitoba-Ebene und durch den knorrigen Wald wie jedes gute kanadische Mädchen. Sie wuchs heran um Geige, Flöte, Klavier sowie Gitarre zu spielen und zu singen wie jede vernünftige multiinstrumentalistisch arbeitende Bürger. Jetzt benutzt sie ihren Bogen, die Gitarre und einen Stift, um die Geschichten der Wildnis einzufangen, durch die sie immer noch wandert.
Mit seinen reichen orchestralen Arrangements, die an Sufjan Stevens und Belle Orchestre erinnern, führt das Debütalbum der Band, Dark Dreams, tief hinunter ins schattenhafte Hinterland, wo vertraute Pfade sich in der Wildnis verlieren. Die Musik erinnert an etwas Verlorenes, das aber zum Greifen nahe ist. Wie ein wildes Kind, das man im Wald versteckt entdeckt und das einem ein flüchtiges Lächeln zuwirft ehe es zwischen Farnen und Gestrüpp verschwindet. Du weißt, du hast dieses Gesicht schon einmal gesehen, aber du kannst es nicht zuordnen...
Einfach ausgedrückt, machen Familiar Wild Orchester-Folk und Pop-Musik mit Herz und Seele und Gehirn und warmer Freundlichkeit. Ihre Songs sind fließend, ohne Hilfsmittel komponiert, rhythmisch einzigartig und doch eingängig. Ihre Musik ist innig und strahlend, ihre Live Show gleichermaßen geprägt von gefiederten Schatten und nachklingender Freude. Sie erweitern den Pop in einer charismatischen Art und Weise: die Zuhörer entwaffnen durch subtile Vertraulichkeiten und sich zurücknehmende Strukturen.

As a child, Familiar Wild’s founder Melissa Bandura ran, barefoot, across amber Manitoba plains and gnarly BC backyard woods like any good Canadian girl. She would grow up to play violin, flute, keys, guitar and sing like any responsible multi-instrumentalist citizen. Now she wields her bow, guitar and pen to spin the tales of the wild she wanders still.
With rich orchestral arrangements reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens and Belle Orchestre, the band’s debut album, Dark Dreams, takes you down into a shadowy backcountry where familiar trails branch out into wilderness paths. The music is reminiscent of something lost, but almost within grasp. Like a feral child you spot hiding in the woods who turns to flash you a slight smile before dashing between the ferns and undergrowth. You know you’ve seen that face before, but can’t quite place it…
