Swilkie, das neue Album der in den Highlands lebenden Songwriterin Iona Lane, verwebt Ökologie, Naturschutz, Inseln und Folklore zu poetischen Liedern und kontemplativen Melodien. Während dreier Aufenthalte auf der Isle of Eigg, der Isle of Mull und Sanday auf den Orkney-Inseln geschrieben, stehen der Sinn für den Ort und die Landschaft im Mittelpunkt dieser Lieder. Von sich sonnenden Haien bis zu Leuchttürmen, von Flechten bis zu verschwindenden Inseln, von Brachvögeln bis zu Baumpflanzungen; das Album wurde in einem Bootshaus an der schottischen Westküste aufgenommen, und der geneigte Hörer kann sogar das Plätschern der Gezeiten durch das Album murmeln hören. Ionas Verbindung zu den Orten am Meer wird in diesen Liedern mit sich entwickelnden Gesangsmelodien, subtilen Gitarren und dröhnenden Shruti-Boxen umgesetzt.
Iona wird auf Swilkie von einer Vielzahl von Musikern unterstützt, darunter: Ben Nicholls am Kontrabass; Louis Campbell an der Gitarre/Banjo; Malin Lewis an der Geige/Pfeife; Signy Jakobsdottir am Schlagzeug/Percussion; Jen Austin am Klavier; Alex Lyon an der Bassklarinette/Klarinette; und Jenny Sturgeon, Josie Duncan und Michael McGovern als Backgroundsänger.
Torus, die Leadsingle (14/02/25), ist inspiriert von der Beziehung der Menschen zu Riesenhaien im Laufe der Geschichte. Der Song beginnt in der Zeit der Volksmärchen, in denen Seeungeheuer Seeleute erschrecken und Boote zum Kentern bringen. Es wird vermutet, dass diese Kreaturen missverstandene Riesenhaie waren, die sich in der Nähe der Oberfläche ernährten. Das Lied führt bis in die 1960er Jahre, als wir die Riesenhaie wegen des Öls in ihren Lebern vor unseren Küsten bis fast zur Ausrottung gejagt haben. Heute sind Riesenhaie ein geschätzter Teil unseres Ökosystems und kehren langsam in unsere Gewässer zurück.
Swilkie enthält eine zweite Disc mit Aufnahmen vor Ort, die exklusiv bei Physical und Bandcamp erhältlich sind. Sie wurde von Iona mit einem einzigen Aufnahmemikrofon vor Ort aufgenommen und gibt einen Einblick in den kreativen Prozess und die Orte, die die Musik inspiriert haben. In den Tracks kommen auch befreundete Musiker und Musikerinnen (Hannah Fisher, Jen Austin, Terra Burgoyne, Lachie Robinson und Bess Shooter) zu Wort!
Iona spielt eine Taran-Gitarre, die sie seit 2020 spielt, als sie mit dem Taran Guitars Young Players Bursary ausgezeichnet wurde. Dieses Album wurde durch die Unterstützung von Creative Scotland möglich gemacht.

Swilkie, the new album from Highlands-based songwriter Iona Lane, weaves ecology, conservation, islands and folklore into poetic songs and contemplative melodies. Written during three residencies on the Isle of Eigg, Isle of Mull and Sanday in Orkney, sense of place and landscape are at the core of these songs. From basking sharks to lighthouses, lichen to vanishing islands, curlews to tree planting; the album was recorded in a boathouse on the West Coast of Scotland and the eager listener may even hear the lapping sound of the tide murmuring through the album. Iona’s connection to places by the sea is translated through these songs with evolving vocal melodies, subtle guitar and droning shruti box.

Torus, the lead single (14/02/25), takes inspiration from the human relationship with basking sharks throughout history. The song starts in the time of folk tales, where sea monsters scare sailors and capsize boats. It’s thought that these creatures might have been misunderstood basking sharks feeding near the surface. The song moves right up into the 1960s when we culled basking sharks off our coasts, to near extinction, for the oil in their livers. In the present day basking sharks are a treasured part of our ecosystem and they are slowly making their way back to our waters.
Swilkie features a second disc of location recordings, exclusive to physical and bandcamp. This disc was recorded by Iona using a single location recording microphone and provides an insight into the creative process and the places that the music takes inspiration from. These tracks also feature fellow musicians and friends (Hannah Fisher, Jen Austin, Terra Burgoyne, Lachie Robinson and Bess Shooter) along the way!
