Interbellum (LBN)
Interbellum ist das Projekt des libanesischen Singer-Songwriters Karl Mattar. Das zwischen Beirut und Berlin ansässige Projekt verbindet melodische Folk-Rock-Songs mit klanglichen Experimenten. Die erste Version der Gruppe, die 2015 mit wechselnden Musikern aus der Beiruter Musikszene gegründet wurde, veröffentlichte schnell das gitarrenlastige Lo-Fi-Album Now Try Coughing und spielte 2016 ihre ersten Konzerte in Beirut.
Das zweite Album Dead Pets, Old Griefs erweiterte die Palette des Projekts beträchtlich, indem es Synthesizer, Samples und Elektronik in den Mix einbrachte. Das mit dem Produzenten Fadi Tabbal in den Tunefork Studios aufgenommene Album wurde vom libanesischen Indie-Label Ruptured veröffentlicht und erhielt internationale Anerkennung. Das Projekt und das Album schafften es in der arabischen Welt und darüber hinaus auf die Bestenlisten und wurden von Publikationen wie The Wire, Gold Flake Paint und Scene Noise und vielen anderen gelobt. Interbellum traten 2018 beim führenden libanesischen Indie-Festival Wickerpark Festival auf und spielten im darauffolgenden Jahr zur Unterstützung des Albums über 50 Shows in Europa.
Das neue Album Our House Is Very Beautiful at Night von Interbellum wird am 7. April 2023 veröffentlicht. Es erforscht die Idee der Geister als generationenübergreifendes Trauma, auf persönlicher und kollektiver Ebene. Die 15 Tracks befassen sich mit Erinnerung, Zeit und Vergangenheit, wobei intime Traumata als Mikrokosmos der nicht enden wollenden Gewaltzyklen im Libanon dargestellt werden und die Krypten ausgegraben werden, in denen Erinnerungen und Nacherinnerungen begraben liegen. Auf seinem ersten selbstproduzierten Werk tauscht Mattar den kaleidoskopischen Pop-Rock des Vorgängeralbums gegen einen organischeren und anarchischeren Sound ein, der sich um die Akustikgitarre herum aufbaut und durch dichte Instrumentenschichten und freilaufende collagenartige Arrangements gekennzeichnet ist.

Interbellum is the project of Lebanese singer-songwriter Karl Mattar. Based between Beirut and Berlin, the project blends melodic folk rock songs with sonic experimentation. Launched in 2015 with a revolving cast of musicians from the Beirut music scene, the first iteration of the group quickly released the lo-fi guitar-driven album Now Try Coughing and played its first shows in Beirut in 2016.
Sophomore album Dead Pets, Old Griefs expanded the project's palette considerably, adding synthesizers, samples and electronics to the mix. Recorded with producer Fadi Tabbal at Tunefork Studios, the album was released by Lebanese indie label Ruptured to international acclaim. The project and album made best of lists in the Arab world and beyond, receiving praise from publications like The Wire, Gold Flake Paint and Scene Noise among many others. Interbellum performed at leading Lebanese indie festival Wickerpark Festival in 2018 and played over 50 shows in Europe the following year in support of the album.
Interbellum's newest album Our House Is Very Beautiful at Night is set for release on April 7th, 2023. It explores the idea of ghosts as intergenerational trauma, on a personal and collective level. The 15 racks deal with memory, time and the past, casting intimate trauma as a microcosm of Lebanon’s unending cycles of violence, excavating the crypts where memories and postmemories lie buried. For his first self-produced effort, Mattar trades the kaleidoscopic pop rock of the previous album for a more organic and anarchic sound, built around the acoustic guitar and characterized by dense layers of instrumentation and freewheeling collage-like arrangements.
