Seine musikalische Heimat siedelt Allen “irgendwo zwischen klassischem Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Country, Rock'n'Roll und Americana” an. In seinen Songs beschwört er die Geister der Vergangenheit herauf, spinnt Geschichten von Tod, Angst, Verzweiflung und Weltuntergang, haucht geheimnisvollen Charakteren Leben ein und wird von Song zu Song, von Zeile zu Zeile schwieriger zu charakterisieren.
Nach seiner beinahe märchenhaften Entdeckung durch Frank Turner im Herbst 2013 ist viel passiert im Leben von John Allen. Er hat seinen Job gekündigt, sein Lehrer-dasein an den Nagel gehängt um sich vollständig der Musik zu widmen und tourt seitdem rastlos durch Europa. Weit mehr als 600 Shows in weniger als vier Jahren stehen zu Buche, darunter Tourneen mit Größen der Singer/Songwriter Szene wie Lucero, Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers, Tim Vantol, Joe Ginsberg, Northcote und Emily Barker, sowie Konzerte mit dem Popstar Milow.
"Friends & Other Strangers" heißt Allen’s inzwischen fünftes Studioalbum. In ihm zeigt sich Allen lyrischer Reifer denn je. Er besingt die ungleiche Freundschaft von Ernest Hemingway und James Joyce, verregnete Abende auf der Reeperbahn und wird, zum ersten Mal in seiner Karriere offen politisch.
Allen Dämonen, allen zwielichtigen Gestalten und allen zu Musik gemachten Niederlagen zum Trotz, schafft es Allen dennoch, immer wieder, an Klavier, an der Gitarre oder als Frontmann seiner Band "The Black Pages" kleine Leuchtfeuer der Hoffnung zu entzünden. Seine markante Stimme ist zugleich brachial und zerbrechlich, düster und romantisch, rumpelnd, bedrohlich und versöhnlich, dass der Rolling Stone gar Vergleiche mit Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave und Tom Waits heranzog. Neben der Musik schreibt Allen gerade an seinem ersten Roman und findet Entspannung in der Fotografie.

The Ghosts of the Past
Following his fairy tale breakthrough as a support act of British folk punk superstar Frank Turner in 2013, much has happened in the life of John Allen. He has quit his teaching job to focus on music only and has ever since then been on the road almost constantly. His restless touring schedule has seen him play more than 600 shows in less than five years all over Europe. He has shared the stage with the likes of Lucero, Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers, Tim Vantol, Joe Ginsberg, Northcote, Emily Barker, and Belgian Popstar Milow.
"Home is somewhere between traditional singer/songwriter, folk, country, Rock'n'roll and Americana," he says. In his songs he conjures the ghosts of the past, yarns tales of death, fear and desperation and the apocalypse itself, breathes life into shady characters and is, line by line, song by song, harder to grasp.
"Friends & Other Strangers" is Allen's fifth album and is evidence that, as a writer, he is constantly evolving. With lyrical depth and a way with words unparalleled for a non native of the English language, he sings about the unlikely friendship between Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce, about rainy Reeperbahn nights and, for the first time ever, he turns into a political songwriter.
Despite of all the demons, the odd creatures and the defeats turned into music, Allen manages time and time again, at the piano as well as at the guitar or as the frontman of his band "The Black Pages" to find hope at the end of a dark tunnel. His remarkable voice is at the same time brute and brittle, dark and romantic, rumbling, intimidating and reconciliatory. When asked for a comparison, Rolling Stone magazine described him as a mix of Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave and Tom Waits.
Apart from music, Allen is also currently working on his first novel and enjoys photography.
John Allen's new album "Friends & Other Strangers" will be released by Gunner Records in November 2018.
