Nach einem bewegenden Konzeptalbum über die Liebe und dazugehörigem Singer/Songwriter-Ausflug („Unspoken“, 2016) ist Stimmwunder Andy Jones auf seinem zweiten Solo-Album waschechter Rock-Leadsänger. Und das, obwohl die neuen Songs die gleiche Wärme und Intimität ausstrahlen wie ihre Vorgänger. Oder sogar mehr. „Shield“ ist poetisch, persönlich und kraftvoll.

Es gibt wieder große Rock-Hymnen („The Man I Was Before“) und Ohrwurm-Riffs („Your Wish“), aber auch Songs, die sich an Streicher schmiegen („Don’t Come To Me“, „Love Of My Youth“) und wärmende Ausflüge ans Folk-Lagerfeuer („Parting Promise“). Was es nicht gibt, ist besserer Rock-Gesang, als der von Andy Jones. Mit starker Stimme schafft er Visionen vom Leben und der Liebe („Love Of My Youth“, „Automatic“) und singt von Vaterschaft („Anticipation“, „Shield“) und falschen Freunden („Camouflage“, „Don’t Come To Me“).

Er singt auch politische Songs – Lieder über Tier- und Menschenrechte („Better than this“, „I see you“), über die Flüchtlingskrise und ihre Ursachen („Karim“, „Will We Ever Learn?“) und über die politische Gleichgültigkeit der Menschen („The Man I Was Before“). Und erstaunlicherweise sind die Ausflüge Richtung Weltgeschehen genauso persönlich und menschlich, wie alle anderen Songs auf „Shield“.

Andy Jones liefert, was im Musikbusiness-Einheitsbrei von heute sehr selten geworden ist: eine makellos produzierte Platte, die man nicht nur mit den Ohren hört. Das Einzigartige an „Shield“ ist die emotionale Tiefe unter der musikalisch perfekten Oberfläche, die nicht hörbaren, aber fühlbaren Zweifel in der starken und festen Stimme. Zerbrechlichkeit im unkaputtbaren Gewand.

After a moving concept album about love in his first offering as a singer-songwriter (“Unspoken”, 2016), the exceptional vocal talent Andy Jones has returned to being a genuine rock vocalist. This despite the fact that the songs on his new sophomore album, “Shield”, exude the same warmth and intimacy as those that went before, perhaps even more so. “Shield” is poetic, personal and powerful.

On the album, you will find the expected rock anthems (“The Man I Was Before”), catchy riffs (“Your Wish”), songs where the strings are at the fore (“Don’t Come to Me”, “Love Of My Youth”) as well as warming excursions to the folk campfire (“Parting Promise”). But what you will not find is better rock vocals than Andy’s. His strong voice creates visions of love and life (“Love of My Youth”, “Automatic”), of fatherhood (“Anticipation”, “Shield”) and of false friendships (“Camouflage”, “Don’t Come to Me”).

He also sings political songs about animal and human rights (“Better Than This”, “I See You”), the refugee crisis (“Karim”, “Will We Ever Learn?”) and political apathy (“The Man I Was Before”). And, astonishingly, the material on global events is just as personal and as human as any of the other songs on “Shield”.

Andy Jones has given us something that has become extremely rare in the frequently monotonous music industry: an impeccably produced album which the listener will feel as much as they will hear. “Shield” is especially unique in offering emotional depth beneath its musically immaculate surface: the almost inaudible yet perceptible doubt in Andy’s strong and determined voice. Fragility cloaked in indestructibility.
