Nordgarden (NO)
Seitdem Nordgarden sein letztes englisches Album im Jahr 2012 veröffentlicht hat, hat sich einiges verändert. Aber glaubt nicht, dass der Norweger zwischenzeitlich nichts getan hätte… Er lebte 4 Jahre auf Sizilien, wo er auch Vater einer wunderschönen Tochter wurde. 2013 veröffentlichte er ein Album auf Italienisch. 2014 spielte er mehr als 140 Konzerte in ganz Europa und im folgenden Jahr fogte das Album „Live in Dresden“.
Das neue Album „Changes“ ist wiederum ein völlig neues Kapitel. Nordgarden wollte schon immer ein Album in mit kompletter band im Studio aufnehmen, so wie früher mal Platten gemacht wurden. Und so kam es nun auch. Mithilfe einiger wunderbarer Musiker – die besten aus der aktuellen norwegischen Musikszene – schuf er ein warmes, organisches Album, das wirklich pulsierend und bodenständig ist.
10 Songs spannen den Bogen durch Folk, Country, Soul & Blues. Manchmal muten sie gar wie ein Echo von New Orleans an. Zwei der Songs enstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit der legendären englisch/norwegischen Country-Sängerin Claudia Scott, zwei weitere mit der schwedin johanna Demker.
Die Texte sprechen von verlorener Liebe, der Wichtigkeit guter Freundschaften, dem Verlangen nach friedvoller Natur und dem bedürfnis, dem hektischen städtischen täglichen Leben zu entkommen. Der Blues „Don’t Need Nobody“ ist ein direkte Reaktion auf die Terrorattacken von Paris und Beirut 2015.
Aber das Element, das sich durch das ganze Album zieht und ja auch das Album betitelt, ist die Veränderung. Immer wieder durchleben wir Veränderungen und diese werfen uns manchmal aus der Bahn und wir springen dann herum wie Atome. Manchmal fühlt es sich an, als ob man sich in der Mitte eines Sturms befindet und schnell das Navigieren lernen muss, damit man auf der anderen Seite heil und vielleicht sogar als besserer Mensch wieder rauskommt.

Quite a few things have changed since Nordgarden released his previous album in English back in 2012. But do not believe the Norwegian has been up to nothing in the meantime. He has lived four years in Sicily where he also became a father to a beautiful daughter. In 2013 he released an album in Italian of all things. In 2014 he played more than 140 concerts around Europe and in the following year he also made the album “Live in Dresden”.
The new album “Changes” on the other hand is a whole new chapter. Nordgarden has always desired to record an album live in the studio with the entire band playing at the same time and in the same room – just like they made albums in the old days. And that is what this record has become. With the help from a bunch of amazing musicians - some of the best on the Norwegian music scene today – he has managed to create a thoroughly warm and organic album that sounds really pulsating and solid.
The music was recorded in Studio Paradiso in Oslo during the Winter of 2016. It was engineered by Christian Engfelt og Marcus Forsgren (from Norwegian acts like Big Bang and Jaga Jazzist). During two days the band recorded eleven songs live in the studio. Then Erik Johannessen arranged the brass (also of Jaga Jazzist). Lise Voldsdal (of Sivert Hoyem) played the string parts and the soul ladies Rikke Normann and Sisi Sumbundu (of Madcon) did the vocal harmonies.
The album consists of ten songs that travel through landscapes of folk, country, soul & blues. Sometimes there are even echoes of New Orleans. Two of the songs were written with the legendary English/Norwegian country artist Claudia Scott. Two more were written with the Swedish Johanna Demker. Co-writing is also a new element on this record. It has been a revelation to Nordgarden to see what that can bring along of creativity, variation and determination to make a song.
The lyrics speak of lost love, the importance of good friendships, the longing for peaceful nature and the need to get out of the hectic urban daily life. The blues ”Don´t Need Nobody” is actually an immediate reaction to the terror attacks that went down in Paris and Beirut late 2015.
But the recurrent element, which also holds the title of the album, is change. Continuously we go through a number of changes in our lives and these sometimes throw us off guard and we bounce around like small atoms. Sometimes it can feel like you´re in the middle of a storm and you must quickly learn how to navigate through it so that you hopefully can come out on the other side just as intact and maybe even as a better person.
